Post-Natal Chiropractic Care

post natal chiropracticOur office regularly sees expectant mothers as a part of our chiropractic practice. So many pregnant women experience neck pain, upper back pain, low back pain, and sciatica as a result of the changes that occur in their body during pregnancy.

The Post-Natal chiropractic care or the Post-Partum adjustment may be one of the most important chiropractic adjustments a patient can receive.

Post-natal chiropractic care is just too important to ignore.

I often hear patients describe their pregnancies and deliveries and then talk about the reoccurring back pain that’s been present ever since. When you consider the trauma that can occur to the mother’s pelvis during the delivery process, it’s no wonder that back pain is regularly the result.

In order to deliver the baby, the mom’s body will generate a hormone called relaxin, which allows the ligaments to become more pliable. This allows the pelvis to open up and make room for the baby to be delivered.

Once delivery has occurred, the relaxin is no longer needed and leaves the body. The ligaments will then return to their normal elasticity. If the pelvis is in it’s correct alignment at this time, there’s no reason why the pelvis wouldn’t return to its normal form.

However, this is rarely the case. The pelvis is usually already misaligned prior to delivery and then it only gets further out of alignment post-delivery.

That’s why the post-partum chiropractic adjustment can be so helpful. The new mom is already recovering from the entire process. Being tired and in pain is no way to get things started. Worse, this type of problem is regularly ignored because she believes it will go away when everything else does too.

If the mom is a runner, things can start going downhill quickly. It’s runners and recent mothers that often deal with a lot of pelvis misalignment that leads to lower back pain and sciatica. After just a few visits, they start to notice that the pain is significantly decreased and the pelvis moving and functioning as it should during exercise and daily activities.

If you’ve never been to see a chiropractor, you might be surprised to find out how much better you can feel after just a few visits. Our office is set up to accommodate both pre-natal and post-natal visits, with special tables that allow us to do treatments without any twisting of the lower back.
