Can You Get Addicted to Chiropractic Adjustments?

It’s one of the most common questions chiropractors hear: “Can you get addicted to chiropractic adjustments?” Some people worry that once they start care, they’ll need to keep coming forever or that their body will somehow become dependent on adjustments.

In the video below, I share my perspective on this question and explain why the idea of being “addicted” to chiropractic isn’t accurate.

Not a Physical Addiction

First, let’s clear up a big misconception. Chiropractic adjustments are not physically addictive. Unlike drugs or alcohol, adjustments don’t create chemical dependence or withdrawal symptoms. Your body doesn’t “need” adjustments in the way it would crave a substance.

What does happen is that you may notice when your spine isn’t functioning properly after you’ve experienced how good it feels when it is aligned. That awareness isn’t addiction—it’s simply your body telling you something is off.

Getting Used to Feeling Better

Think about it this way: when you start eating healthier or exercising regularly, you begin to feel more energetic, sleep better, and move with ease. If you stop those habits, you notice the difference. That doesn’t mean you’re addicted to eating vegetables or going for a walk—it means your body thrives when you give it what it needs.

The same is true with chiropractic adjustments. Once you’ve experienced proper alignment, improved posture, and less pain, you become more aware of when your body drifts out of balance. Patients often say, “I can tell when I need to come in,” because they’ve gotten used to feeling better.

Recognizing When Something Is Wrong

One of the benefits of regular chiropractic care is that it trains you to listen to your body. Many patients used to live with constant pain and didn’t realize how much it was affecting them until it improved. Once they know what “better” feels like, they’re quicker to recognize when discomfort or stiffness returns.

That awareness isn’t a bad thing—it helps you take action sooner rather than waiting until the problem gets worse.

A Lifestyle Choice, Not a Requirement

At CORE Chiropractic, our goal is always to get you out of pain and back to your normal life as quickly as possible. Once you’re feeling better, it’s your choice how often you continue care. Some patients come in only when they feel pain, while others choose regular “wellness adjustments” to maintain their progress and prevent future issues.

Just like you wouldn’t say someone is addicted to brushing their teeth, getting a massage, or going to the gym, chiropractic adjustments are simply another healthy habit that supports your overall well-being.

The Bottom Line

No, you can’t get addicted to chiropractic adjustments. What you can get used to is feeling better, moving more freely, and living without the pain that once held you back.
